Description

This is a 3' x 4' mural that I painted in Naperville, Illinois, downtown parking lot (Van Burean and Main). Each floor is being dedicated to a school, and there are five in Naperville. I subbed as a sponsor for Waubonsie Valley... since it's the place I began my career as an art teacher and none of the current teachers were in the area this summer. It was a HUGE challenge. I am not a painter... so I learned a lot. When I finished the project I felt more like a painter ;) It was also difficult because my placement was behind a door. Here's the scoop on the program that allowed me to be part of such a great memory.

Kids Matter and Naperville's River Walk hired muralist Timm Etters. [link] to be the lead artists and mentor high school students. Not only is he is a great friend, he is just an all around great person. (Side note... He is trying to break the world record for most murals painted, which is currently held by Diego Rivera) The students of this floor picked the theme "Empowerment". After all the "students" murals are complete Timm will paintred back drops that fill the hall to the elevator. (The yellow and grey frame is part of his mural)

So... here is my version. This is the toddler of one of my co-workers. She is 17 months and we had a BLAST taking pictures :) She gave me lots of choices for this painting :D In my head I was thinking of the idea of a parade and patriotism. I've had a lot of students have enrolled in the service, and I wanted to do a piece for them. From youth to leadership. I listed (In order) the five US Military Logos: Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard. This was an especially touching project as the 10th anniversary of 9.11. rolled around. I felt very good about how I was creating a memory of the United State's strength and progress.

This gives you a better idea about scale:

A closer look at the US Military logos (About 10" wide):

Y'know, it wasn't until I was reading the text here that I realized all the circular seals were painted into the mural. At the thumbnail size, every one of the seals looks like an embroidered patch sewed with mathematical precision and glued onto the wall next to the painted 2D baby.

i.e. Now THAT'S skill. Good work. :-)
